If you are a beginning drummer or you're looking for your first drum set (or a starter drum set for you child), you have a lot of options. This is mainly because junior drum sets are so flexible, and come in many configurations. However when you are a beginning drummer, often smaller and simpler is better. Many learn faster with less drums or on a smaller drum kit than they would with a drum set with more pieces.
Choosing a 3 piece junior drum set can make a lot of sense for a child drummer or anyone buying there first drum kit.

So you are shopping for your first drum set, or a junior drum set for you child. The first thing you'll probably notice are the different configuration of starter or kids drum sets. Different drum sets have various number of drums, and for starter drum kits, its generally either a 3-piece, 4-piece, or 5-piece drum set. Now advanced and professional drummers go crazy and may add many more pieces to their kits, though many stick with a 3, 4, or 5 piece set forever. But we are talking junior drum kits here, which normally have 3 to 5 pieces.
While any of these configurations are perfectly fine when choosing a starter drum set, this post will explain the difference so you can make an education decision.

We all know children can have an almost endless amount of energy, but if you had a toy drum set, you might find that they are able to release some of that built up energy. Wouldn't it be nice to find a safe, fun and educational outlet for all that energy? A great way to get them to learn about music would be to purchase a toy drum set.
Toy drum sets are smaller versions of actual drum sets. Children can learn that playing music is a blast and the toy drum set is a great way to make that music. It is a great way to broaden your child's mind, giving him the chance to have fun and exercise his or her mind. Having toy drums can give your child a better sense of responsibility when shown that this is an instrument and not a toy. Even though it can be used just for fun.

Due to the popularity of musically-inspired video games like guitar hero, many children have expressed an interest in getting starting on a musical instrument. Kids drum sets are one very popular category of child instruments. But, before you run out and start shopping for your child's drum set, you should understand the difference between a child drum set and 'toys'.
This is one of the reasons why so many professional musicians continue criticized games like guitar hero. Specifically, they believe these games give children the false impression that learning music is easy and that once kids find out that its not so easy, they quickly give up on it. While this trend might be good for profits at the local music store, it may actually have a negative affect on next generation of musicians.
In this article we are going to be taking a look at kids drum sets and why they are most assuredly not toys. A kid's drum set of today is essentially a miniature version of a full drum set, smaller but generally a quality instrument. And although guitars are all the rage because of the many games, drums are also very popular and can be great learning instruments for children as well. (And take it from us, they don't hurt the fingers like a guitar either!!).

Drums are fun not only because they form the foundation of any band as they form rhythm and beats, but also because they physically active which kids love. Many young children simply may not possess the discipline or patience to sit down and learn chord structure on a piano or a guitar. Not to mention the fact that a piano is rarely part of a rock band!

Rhythm is a natural flow that can be instilled in children from an early age. A junior drum set is a wonderful way to encourage musical talent in your child. Recently, one of the cutest videos online was of a toddler in diapers rocking out to beats of a popular song proving that you are never too young or old to enjoy a good beat!
Junior drums start your kid out on the right foot with just the correct size for their age and skill level. It is important that a child's starter drum set be comfortable to play so they do not miss a beat! Choosing a drum set color is a very personal thing but when choosing a color for a child drum set you better be especially careful. Kids are of course very picky when it comes to the color of everything, their clothes, their toys, and of course their drum sets so if you pick the wrong color toy drum set you might as well have given them an oboe to play with.
This is especially true with girls, who after all are much more color and fashion conscious than boys. I've learned the hard way with my little girl that if something isn't one of her primary colors (pink, purple, or yellow), its going to be an issue.

Video game consoles have really changed since we first played Pong, PacMan and all of the other classics. Who thought back then that one day video games could be used to teach real skills or become so realistic and technologically advanced?
Guitar Hero and Rock Band are games that are not only fun to play, but it has been said by Harmonix Music representatives that if you can play the Rock Band drum set on the 'hard' setting, you can pretty much play the drums for real! But are you really playing the drums, or just copying the pattern you see on the screen? If you are able to play along with the video game, that does not translate into the real world and does not mean you will be able to play a real drum kit. To play real drums you need to be able to read music. which you won't learn playing a game; excellent coordination and rhythm. If you can't read music you may never be able to play real drums unless you are musically gifted and able to hear what needs to be done. Most bands these days no longer use electronic drum kits such as were popular in the 80's. Real drums give the drummer more control over the volume, pitch and duration of the drum note and cymbals. The most basic lesson required to start learning the drums is to master the drumstick grips.
Traditional Grip
This is the most popular method of holding the drumsticks and one that is most commonly taught. It began to be used by drummers in marching bands.
The right hand will use a hammer-like motion. Your left hand should hold the drumstick just like a pencil when you are writing.. The only difference is that you must keep two fingers on top of the shaft and two fingers below the shaft. Allow your drumsticks to rest easily on the fleshy bit of your palm between your thumb and first finger. Read the rest of this entry »

Some people believe that studying music is just for people who want to make a living out of it. After all, what would an accounting graduate do with a few units in Music Theory, but for they’re required, right? Would a mother even have any use at all for having knowledge with voice lessons? Doing the house work or taking care of the family’s needs has nothing to do with achieving something in singing. Then why learn music at all?
