If you are a beginning drummer or you're looking for your first drum set (or a starter drum set for you child), you have a lot of options. This is mainly because junior drum sets are so flexible, and come in many configurations. However when you are a beginning drummer, often smaller and simpler is better. Many learn faster with less drums or on a smaller drum kit than they would with a drum set with more pieces.
Choosing a 3 piece junior drum set can make a lot of sense for a child drummer or anyone buying there first drum kit.
First of all, to be clear, a 3 piece drum set means that your set will include 3 main drums:
- base drum
- snare drum
- a single tom-tom drum (usually mounted on the base)
Of course the set will likely have other pieces like cymbals and a hi-hat, but the main difference in a 3-piece junior drum set from a 4 or 5 piece set is the number of tom-tom drums. 4 piece sets have an extra tom-tom mounted on the base drum, and 5 piece sets usually add a floor tom.
So are these extra tom-tom drums essential for you to practice, learn, and sound good playing drums? No! In fact many advanced and professional drummers continue playing on a 3 piece drum set forever. While a few extra tom-toms adds more range of sounds and beats you can play on your kit, for advanced drummers it really a matter of preference as to how many tom-toms they add to their kit.
If you are new to drumming, a single tom-tom is fine. As you first begin to drum, you'll want to mainly master keeping a consistent, standard beats using you hi-hat, base drum, and snare. The tom-tom and cymbals are mainly used in songs during 'fill ins' and you can do some great fills with a 3 piece drum kit. Your hands and mind likely will be less confused with less drums anyway when you are new, and a single tom 3 piece starter drum set for many is probably easier.
A 3-piece junior drum kit may be less expense than the 5 piece alternatives as well. We always 
recommend that cost be a factor when being your starter drum set. Remember, you're not even sure at this point if drumming will be a long term hobby for you or your child at this point. No need to buy a fully decked out set at this point with all kinds of extra drums.
So if you are looking for your first drum set, take a look at a variety of sets that the market offers, but strongly consider starting with a 3-piece jr drum set.
