Songwriting Tips – 3 Super Easy Ways To Come Up With A Song Idea

Songwriting is really no different from any other form of writing. You start by staring at a blank page and try desperately to come up with an idea. It's a lonely place to be. For some, it never gets beyond that point. Sadly, it doesn't have to be that way. Coming up with an idea for a song is as easy as looking out your front door. In this article, I'm going to share three super easy ways to come up with a song idea. I'm sure you will find these most helpful.

Probably the best way to come up with an idea is simply to listen to what other people are already writing. Unless you live on Mars, there has to be a local radio station that plays the hits of today. Where I live, we have no less than a dozen radio stations ranging from pop to hip hop to alternative. If I ever need an idea for a song, one is as close as turning the dial. I'll listen to the lyrics especially. That's where ideas come from. Too many people make the mistake of listening to the music. Unless you're writing an instrumental, this is probably not the best way to go about it.

Next best way to come up with a song idea is to pick up a newspaper and take a look at what's going on in the world. Think I'm kidding? Going back to the radio, listen to all the songs that people sing about war, drugs, the human condition and so many other things that we read about in the paper each day. Many songs have actually been written based on actual events. Take Don McLean's "American Pie" which was written about the plane crash that took Buddy Holly and other great musicians. The newspaper is a great place to come up with song ideas.

Finally, if the radio and the newspaper don't inspire you, take a walk outside. I'm serious. Take a look around the neighborhood. Have you ever stopped to notice what flowers are growing on your lawn or what trees have been planted on your street? Have you taken a look at the cars parked on the street? How many songs about cars have been written? Off the top of my head, Prince's "Little Red Corvette" comes to mind. Maybe he didn't need to see a red Corvette to write that song, but it can't hurt to take a look around your neighborhood to see who's driving what.

These three super easy ways are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to digging up an idea for a song. There are many more ways. However, listening to the radio, picking up a newspaper or just taking a walk around your neighborhood should give you plenty of fodder for your next hit tune.
