Consider a Junior Drum Set.With the growing popularity of music-inspired games like guitar hero, many children have gotten interested in real musical instruments.  But what is a parent to do if they don't know anything about musical instruments?  Well, one option is to buy your child a junior drum set.

Drums are fun not only because they form the foundation of any band as they form rhythm and beats, but also because they physically active which kids love.  Many young children simply may not possess the discipline or patience to sit down and learn chord structure on a piano or a guitar.  Not to mention the fact that a piano is rarely part of a rock band!

That is why so many parents decide to start their children on a junior drum set.  What is a junior drum set?  First things first, although they are designed for children and are quite affordable, make no mistake about it junior drums are actual instruments, not toys.  In fact, the only real difference between a junior set and a full set is, not surprisingly, that the full set is larger and has more pieces to play.  Junior drum sets are also perfect starters for kids and let parents know if their child is truly serious about the drums as they get older.

Just like every other musical instrument, starting early is the key, that's why it is no surprise that many advanced drummer started out on junior drums.

What should you look for in a junior drum set?

When shopping for a junior drum set it is important to find one that can stand up to the normal wear and tear a child ordinarily unleashes on his toys.  Because as we said, most junior drum sets are quality instruments, they are made to stand up to the wear and tear even a child we unleash on them.  If you purchase a 'toy', there's no guarantee what kind of quality you are going to get.  Don't buy your child's first drum set in a toy store.

In terms of size, most junior drum sets come in 3-piece, 4-piece or 5-piece sets.  They often include a base drum, a snare drum, a tom-tom drum, a high-hat cymbal and a crash cymbal. But before you buy, it is also important to check for other accessories like a throne (drumming seat), a drum key, drum pedal and, of course, drum sticks. Often junior drums will include everything a young drummer will need to set up his set and get playing straightaway, but it is always a good idea just to make sure.

The size of your drum set, whether a 3-piece or a 5-piece, depends entirely on the age of the young drummer. If you have a banger between the ages of 3 and 5, it's best to start them out on a simple 3-piece set.  If, however, your child is between the ages of 6 and 10, you can consider a 5-piece set.

It is also a good idea to look for a used junior drum set online, perhaps on auction sites like eBay. Since drummers frequently step up from junior drums to full drums sets, there are always plenty of them available for sale. That way if you child loses interest in the drums after a week, you will not have not have wasted that much.
